The Mystery Castle is located in the Foothills of South Mountain Park (two miles south of Baseline Road) at 800 E. Mineral Road in Phoenix, Arizona 85040. Since I had wanted to do at least one touristy thing and had two friends tell me to visit the Mystery Castle in Phoenix, I found myself here on my last visit to AZ. Not sure what to expect based upon what friends had told me, it was hard to fathom what was beyond the gates leading up to the man-made structure. We arrived when it opened.
Mystery Castle is located in South Phoenix, in the foothills of South Mountain Park. Boyce Luther Gulley, who moved to the southwest to treat his tuberculosis, built the castle in the 1930s for his daughter, Mary Lou. Today, it is considered a Phoenix Point of Pride, one of 33 attractions representing the best of Phoenix.
Mystery Castle may not be an actual castle but there is something wonderful about a structure built by a non-builder. The floors aren't level, the windows are odd sizes some which come from car parts and the rooms are full folk art.

Mystery Castle is a Phoenix Point of Pride, named as such by the Phoenix Pride Commission.It was built by Boyce Luther Gulley, who abandoned his wife and daughter in Seattle, circa 1927, after learning that he had tuberculosis.
